Máté 2009 Rosso di Montalcino

Máté 2009 Rosso di Montalcino, $20.65-$26.99, 92 points, appears in the glass as a very light sunburst orange/red with a broad transparent rim.
The nose whispers a lovely freshly turned earth and red cherry, both of which continue onto the palate gaining bourbon, caramel, tobacco, and pleasantly subtle dried herbal notes.
Medium bodied with an edge of acidity and tannin that is magnified in a long finish of eucalyptus, heat (14.5% alcohol), and a white peppery spice.
This is a very dry red wine, one I like very much, but it just may be a bit rough around the edges for those silky Merlot lovers out there.
As for an accompaniment with food, try traditional Italian cuisine, but for me, I like this spirited Sangiovese by itself.
